About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Settlement Distribution & Accounting Clerk to join our personal injury law firm’s remote settlement team. This position is responsible for accurately reviewing settlement files, preparing settlement distribution statements, coordinating lien and expense information, and ensuring settlement funds are properly accounted for and distributed.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working with Litify in a personal injury law firm and understands the settlement lifecycle from settlement approval through final client disbursement.
This is not a general bookkeeping position. Candidates should have direct experience with personal injury settlements, settlement accounting, client distributions, liens, case expenses, and law firm financial records.
Key Responsibilities Settlement Processing & Distribution Review settlement files to ensure all required documentation and financial information is complete before disbursement. Prepare accurate settlement statements / settlement distribution breakdowns. Calculate and verify: Gross settlement amounts Attorney fees Case costs and expenses Medical bills Medical liens Health insurance liens Attorney/medical provider liens Lien reductions and negotiated amounts Net client proceeds Verify settlement calculations against case records and supporting documentation. Coordinate with attorneys, case managers, lien departments, medical providers, and clients regarding settlement balances and outstanding obligations. Track settlement checks, wires, ACH payments, and other disbursements. Ensure client funds are distributed only after appropriate approvals and documentation are obtained. Maintain organized settlement documentation and audit trails. Litify Responsibilities Maintain and update settlement and financial information in Litify. Enter and verify settlement amounts, attorney fees, expenses, liens, payments, and distributions. Review case financial records for accuracy and completeness. Reconcile settlement information in Litify with supporting documentation and accounting records. Identify discrepancies and coordinate corrections with the appropriate department. Maintain accurate case and financial records throughout the settlement process. Accounting & Reconciliation Assist with reconciliation of settlement-related transactions. Review client ledgers and transaction histories for accuracy. Verify incoming settlement funds and outgoing disbursements. Assist with trust/IOLTA-related accounting and documentation as directed by the firm's accounting or management team. Reconcile settlement distributions against approved settlement statements. Research and resolve discrepancies involving settlement checks, expenses, liens, or client balances. Maintain accurate records of outstanding checks, unpaid liens, and pending distributions. Assist with month-end or periodic settlement accounting reports. Administrative Support Communicate professionally with attorneys, clients, medical providers, lienholders, and vendors. Follow up on outstanding settlement documents, lien information, bills, and payment confirmations. Maintain confidentiality of client, financial, and legal information. Ensure all settlement files are organized and up to date. Follow firm procedures, approval requirements, and internal controls. Assist with additional settlement/accounting tasks as assigned. Required Qualifications 2+ years of experience working in a personal injury law firm, preferably in settlements, accounting, case closing, or disbursements. Hands-on Litify experience is REQUIRED. Strong understanding of personal injury settlement calculations and distributions. Experience preparing settlement statements and client distribution breakdowns. Experience handling medical liens, reductions, case expenses, and attorney fees. Strong accounting and reconciliation skills. Experience working with client ledgers or law firm trust accounting is strongly preferred. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Excellent attention to detail and numerical accuracy. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment. Ability to handle confidential legal and financial information professionally. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting a California personal injury law firm. Experience with California personal injury settlement procedures. Experience with QuickBooks Online. Experience with Salesforce or other legal practice management platforms. Experience with law firm trust/IOLTA accounting. Familiarity with medical lien negotiations and settlement lien resolution. Experience working with U.S.-based law firms in a remote/offshore capacity. Familiarity with ACH, wire transfers, settlement checks, and electronic payment processing.
Must-Have Skills
- 2+ years in personal injury law firm settlement, accounting, or case closing with hands-on Litify experience, strong understanding of PI settlement calculations, lien handling, and trust accounting principles.
Nice-to-Have
- California PI law firm experience, QuickBooks Online proficiency, familiarity with medical lien negotiations, Salesforce or legal practice management platforms, and remote/offshore work background.
